The Netherlands Game

OK, I wasn't there and Guus was, and he's coached more games than I've watched from the grandstand or on television, but I beg to differ. If our great leader was "delighted" with Australia's performance against the Netherlands, he clearly sees things I don't. In the first half, Australia was overwhelmed by Dutch territorial dominance, which left the boys rushing their passes and kicking the ball away. The fluidity of the game against Greece was replaced by a shortage of time and gaps through the centre of defence. It was only an outstanding display by Schwarzer and profligate Dutch finishing that kept Australia from a drubbing. They hit the post and missed some sitters, and suddenly, the media claims we can match it with the best.

OK, the second half was better, but it was by physical force rather than anything pretty or particularly skilful. Luke Wilkshire plays in the third tier of the English Leagues, and even then is often left on the bench. Guus is impressed with his athleticism, but if he is the best we can field to cover for injured players, we'd better hope Tim and Harry get better quickly. The recently reliable Grella and Bresciano also looked overwhelmed. The team needs Kewell as much as England needs Rooney.

But let's not be too negative. Besides the superb Schwarzer, Chipperfield was strong, and Cahill lively when he came on. The great thing about this match is that it put the team under intense pressure in the way it will face at least three times in the World Cup, and we came away with a draw. It was hard fought and ugly, but it will always be 1-1 regardless of how it was achieved.

So Guus, since you go around everywhere with my initials on your chest, you're forgiven.

Was the glass half full or half empty? The positive spin says we've just beaten the European Champions and drawn with the world's second best team. Can't be bad. At least the Dutch didn't bury us - almost, but they didn't.

At times it did look like Australia of old but now, following Japan, all is forgiven. Keep posting.
